![]() The employee ended up having a miscarriage, which to this day I feel absolutely terrible about. ![]() The employee ended up quitting, which is exactly what my employer wanted, so she did not have to pay out her short term disability claim. She had caught wind the employee had a baby shower at her home and felt if she was well enough to have a baby shower she was well enough to come to work. The most aggregious example was when she required me to harass an employee who was pregnant and out on bed rest with a doctor's note. She regularly humiliated and bullied staff.Īs a Manager, I had to carry out dirty deeds at her behest frequently. The company had ridiculously high turnover because of her. She was the most cruel, vindictive person I have ever met. I worked for a very small business with no HR department when I was in my twenties. However, not all employers are professional or act ethically either. I would not typically advise anyone to quit publicly or post that to the internet. Heck, economists have great difficulty forecasting recessions in the past. Economists have searched for ways to forecast future recessions, but by and large have come up empty. I agree with most of what you say - but the bolded section relating to recessions isn't accurate. Recessions always hit when workers start getting some hand in the negotiation table. The 2020 crash in the job market was just a test. If you're not playing the employment game like a chess master, you're setting yourself up to be checkmated.Īnd remember: There is a recession right around the corner. And if they made that quitting public in a show of toxicity, they become radioactive to the employers. They don't have a BATNA.Įmployers discriminate against people who are out of work, and especially if they quit. They're in a weaker negotiation position. In addition, one who is out of work eventually becomes more desperate and more willing to take toxic jobs that they would ordinarily pass up if they didn't have to worry about pending homelessness. They have a BATNA and can walk away if they want. Passive candidates are VERY desirable to recruiters and tend to get paid more than an out of work candidate with similar backgrounds. Quitting a job without having another one lined up obliterates people's finances, AND loses a very important advantage workers have - being a passive candidate. These are not "gestures of good will" these are the way you play the game.
